Functions of operating system.
- To manage the system: To connect computer devices like monitor, mouse, printers etc.
- To provide user interface: user Interacts with application software and computer hardware through the user interface.
- Starting Application: It starts applications for example word, excel, PowerPoint and other applications.
Features of operating system
- System Boot: To start computer or restarting computer is called system boot.
- Warm Boot: Restart process is called warm boot.
- Cold Boot: The process of Booting(Start) a closed computer.
Operating System works based on GUI (Graphical user interface)
which includes Icons, Pointer, windows, Menu, dialogue box, Help ect.
- Icon: It is graphical representation of a file or program.
- Pointer: It is controlled by mouse, which changes its shape according to what is currently being done on screen.
- Window: which starts program and shows the information.
- Menu: Which shows the options and command list.
- Dialogue box: It gives information and requests for the input.
- Help: It provides the online help for the programs and operating system.

These operating systems are also called Desktop operating systems. OS controls only one desktop or notebook. It is installed on the client computer on the network.

Utility Software:
Utility software helps the our micro computer to analyze, configure, maintain the computer. It supports computer infrastructure. It identify the problems and suggest solution for the computer issues.
Different types of utility software:
- Troubleshooting or Diagnostic program: It finds problems from your computer. And prevents from issues.
- Antivirus: It removes the virus and protects computer from virus. Ex antivirus: Norther, Quick heal, NP etc
- Backup Program: Backup program helps us copy (Backup) our files into other devices
- File compression program: It helps to reduce file larger one into smaller one. for ex. if I have image of 2 MB. I can reduce it in whatever size I want.
- Disk clean up: It is a type of trouble shooting utility, Which find and deletes unwanted files.
- Uninstall Program: It helps us to uninstall the software which we don't want to keep in our system.

As we all know Computer does not understand languages Except 0 and 1. where 0 and 1 is called machine language in computer language.
Mean while Language translators are the programs which helps to translate source code into machine/object code.
